A busload of eighth and ninth grade students from the Franklin County Center for Applied Technology and Career Exploration visited the flying field on May 28th for a presentation on radio controlled model aircraft. We didn’t have as many members at the field that day probably due to the holiday weekend.
However, Don Fulcher and I shouldered the task and gave as best a presentation that we could. I had my good ol’ reliable RCM Funster to show the students how the controls are set up and what makes the plane fly. As best I could in my rudimentary way, I fired up the Funster and demonstrated normal flight maneuvers with a few loops, rolls and inverted flight. At least they seemed somewhat impressed. The highlight occurred, however, when Ray Crotts allowed Don to use his trainer and buddy box to give several of the students a chance to fly an R/C airplane. The students were thrilled at the opportunity. The other students in the background cheered as the ones "on the sticks" performed their best under the expert guidance of Don.  Bob Keck, in charge of the group, took several digital snapshots of the happenings. They are included along with several of the letters we have received from the group in the "Additional Details" pages. (see link below)

Hello RVRC:

On June 12 & 13, RVRC hosted the Atlantic Helicopter Championships under great weather with 11 enthusiastic entrants. Pilots came from all over the Untied States; one from CA, two from FL, two from AL, one from NC, two from OH, one from MI, and two from our home state VA.

Weather permitted six rounds of competition. Two competed in Class 1 with Grady Adams (AL) in first and John Clark (VA) in second. Class II had four competitors with Ben Minor (VA) in first, Dan Monroe (OH) second, Dave Sellars (FL) third, and John Markham (OH) fourth. Class III ended with David Harkey (AL) in first, Julius Frank (CA) in second and Kevin Coredell (MI) in third. The FAI international class was won by Wayne Mann (NC) with Gordie Meade (FL) in second. Congratulations to all and best wishes to Wayne Mann who will be representing the United States at the F3C World Championships to be held in Poland in August and to David Harkey, our US F3CTeam Captain and IRCHA Vice President.

My goal was to have 15 entrants but I ended up a few short. Short maybe on numbers but those who did attend were most enthusiastic about our contest and the hospitality extended by RVRC. All wanted to come again next year and promised better attendance now knowing RVRC was committed to hosting a contest with an adequate site. They loved our place and it’s surroundings!

My thanks to RVRC for allowing me to hold this event. Special thanks to Steve Stubbs for scoring Saturday and Sunday and to Russell Stiff for providing me support stuff. I also want to thank each of you members who came out to visit. My expenses are not final yet, as I have not received the trophies; I believe the numbers will show a loss of approximately $200.00. Considering I had around $150.00 of one time expenses and a small turnout, next year should show much better results. Thanks again for your support!

Marshall
